Tools of the Trade

When editing films I prefer to use the programme  Adobe Premier Pro, this software allows me to be totally flexible when creatively editing. These tools helped me along the way...

When I imported my raw footage into the computer I first transferred it to a folder, then from that folder I dragged them over to the raw footage bay in the bottom left corner of the program. When I was downloading music and sound effect clips from the internet I used YouTube and a YouTube conversion service. The videos where then transformed into MP3 Music files and where easy to import into the raw footage pile.

These are the tools that are presented in Adobe Premier Pro, the ones I have used the most would be the one shaped like a computer mouse that helps to click and drag on folders. The one shaped like a hand that helps to move large blocks of music or footage. I also really favour the cut tool that helps to edit precise millisecond cuts.

This is where I drag my raw footage sound. From here I am able to put into effect the tools that help to cut the raw footage and sound. This particularly useful to me as I prefer to creatively edit my films I sometimes use the beats of the music to establish where the cut should be made in my film. The green bar is representative of the music track which I used in my film (that being ‘Training Wheels’ by Melanie Martinez) the second blue bar represents the audio from the top blue bar which is the footage that matches the video. You may notice that the word ‘M’ is highlighted in on the left side, this M means muted as I wanted the audio to be muted and replaced with the music, the mute tool is very useful to me as it enables me to stop the sound of unnecessary diegetic sound of the scene, as well as the sound of the director instructing the actors.  The top pink bar symbolises the title sequence where I was able to write the actors, directors, producers and editors of my film and paste them onto the video as it plays.

I wanted to change the first sequence in my film to look hot pink to establish that this film as abstract. I believe it takes place within the dream like state/fantasy of a young girl. The pink not only helps to confirm to the audience that this film is non-naturalistic, pink also has connotations of femininity, childhood, youth and innocence.

The three wheels of colour in this editing window are not as important as the slider dials which respectively control the shadows, mid tones and highlight. These dials were crucial in my film as they helped me create artificial lighting without bringing light into the set. Using these three controls I was able to bring the contrast of my clips up as high or as low as I wanted, this changed the tone of the clip and helped the audience to see my film clearer.
